Oily Hacks: Get the Most out of Your Favorite Products (Part II)

Lindsey Barger is our guest contributor today. We love her product-stretching hacks that solve some real head scratchers...How do you get the kids not use half of the shampoo in one shower? And what do you do with empty oil bottles? Read on and then check out the rest of her posts here.

If you are like me, you probably had a little bit of sticker shock when we joined Young Living. It seems like quite a lot for just a little. As time went on, I began to understand the quality and purpose put into each and every product that Young Living creates. It is kind of frustrating to think back to before I joined the company and realize how much money I was actually wasting on day-to-day products.

Back in the Day: The Biggest, Cheapest Shampoo

Back in the day of weekly trips to Walmart, I would browse the shampoo aisle for the biggest, cheapest bottle of shampoo. I recall going through those massive bottles so fast that shampoo was a frequent item on my shopping list. I would always run out of conditioner first, even after buy two bottles to the one bottle of shampoo. Comparing that to my family’s wash routine now blows my mind. All of those bottles add up! Not only was it harming the pocket book, but our skin was absorbing all of those dangerous synthetics!

A Better Alternative

Don’t freak out, people! There is a better alternative.

If you are a Young Living product user you know “a little goes a long way.” Everything is very concentrated. Or is it just that everything else is so watered down? Whichever perspective you use, we can both agree, we want more bang for our buck. Now, how can you do that without sacrificing quality? If you answered Young Living, you are right! I’ll share with you a few of my product extending hacks.

Even Better: Product-Extending Hacks

Hack #1: Foam Pumps FTW!

Let’s see a raise of hands from those of you who have children with soap moderation issues. You know what I mean. You’ve just purchased a new bottle of shampoo, you’ve sent the kid to be responsible and wash their own hair and body. And to NOT make a mess! (Why do we do this to ourselves? We know they are incapable.) When you do follow up with the process, you know you will find the bathroom flooded and the brand-new bottle of shampoo half-empty. Oh, wait! And the top of your precious child’s head is still dry. Am I right? Where did that soap go?!

Foam pumps means you don't have to monitor your kids' shampoo habits. A win all around.

Foam pumps means you don't have to monitor your kids' shampoo habits. A win all around.

Prior to this my husband or myself would have to ration the Young Living Shampoo. They were not allowed to dispense their own shampoo. It was just too costly to watch swirl down the drain.

The day I came across this trick I nearly fell out of my seat. (I can’t recall who it was but whoever you are THANK YOU!)

Drum roll please!...........

Foam pumps!  Yes, you can put shampoo in them too! And the kids won’t go through it all in one night! I know, right? Why didn’t I think of that sooner!

So here we are with a 8oz Lavender Volume Shampoo, $19.75 (wholesale), $25.99 (retail). I tell you they can last as long, or longer, as giant bottle of shampoo without all of the unwanted additives.

You can also duplicate this with Young Living’s Bath and Shower Gels.

When it comes to the conditioner it’s just so thick that you can feel that it will take a fraction of the average big glob of the standard store-bought kind.

Stretch this awesome face wash for a year of use with our foam pump hack.

Stretch this awesome face wash for a year of use with our foam pump hack.

You can use a foam pump for the Orange Blossom Facial Wash too. This is especially nice with the face wash. I have used and love the Art Cleanser, which is already in a foam pump. However, I can make the Orange Blossom last much longer. I’ve had my tiny 4oz bottle for more than a year and I think it will last a couple more months. Note that I wash my face twice a day. Paying $41.00 (wholesale), $53.95 (retail), for luxurious face wash that will last almost a year and a half, I would say, is well worth it.

Hack #2: Empty-Bottle Solutions!

When you’ve been using oils as much as I have, over the years you acquire quite the collection of empty bottles. I know that I don’t want to throw them out because they still smell so strongly of oils it seems like a waste. I have learned a few tricks for squeezing out every last drop of oil from the bottle.

Option 1: Oil-Infused Soaking Bath

My favorite way to make use of these beautiful empty bottles is to toss the separated orifice reducer, lid and bottle into a bath with Epsom salt and baking soda. Make sure the bottles you choose are not of the hot oil variety for a soaking bath. If you prefer a shower put these things into a big bowl on the floor of the shower, allowing the water to collect in the bowl. This will have a similar effect with the diffused steam. You will be surprised at how much oil still resides in those empty bottles. It is a great way to ensure you have used every last drop available.

Option 2: Oil-Powered Baking Soda

These bottles are good to the last drop! Don't miss even one with this awesome (and easy) natural cleaning hack.

These bottles are good to the last drop! Don't miss even one with this awesome (and easy) natural cleaning hack.

Try making an powering baking soda with essential oils. Baking soda can be such a blessing when it comes to cleaning house. Having Purification scented baking soda, Thieves scented baking soda, or any innumerable combinations of oily smells, would be even nicer. Just open up and uncork an empty bottle and seal all three parts of the bottle in a bowl of baking soda. Now you can freshen a smelly trash can, a cat litter box, a musty broom closet, smelly sneakers, the list goes on. A bowl ready with a little scoop inside for scrubbing the bathtub and toilet is another of my favorite ways to make use of empty bottles.  Chemical free cleaning, that smells great, brought to you by an empty bottle. Pretty cool, huh?

Hack #3: Double the Use of your Seedling Baby Wipes!

Make your Seedling Baby Wipes last twice as long: You just need scissors and five minutes, woo hoo!

Make your Seedling Baby Wipes last twice as long: You just need scissors and five minutes, woo hoo!

I have one last trick for you.

Have you smelled the new Seedlings Baby Wipes? If you haven’t you are missing out! They are AMAZING! I don’t have babies anymore but I love the smell so much I have found a few good reasons for keeping them handy. A package of 72 wipes is $11.75 (wholesale), $15.46 (retail). How about doubling those wipes? Do you remember those refillable flushable wipe containers? They are half the size of a standard baby wipe container. Now the Seedlings wipes are really sturdy wipes. They are almost wash cloth material! I believe half of a wipe could hold up better than a full store bought wet wipe any day. Take one package of the Seedlings Baby Wipes, with a good pair of scissors, and cut them in half. You could divide them between two refillable wipes containers or into one or more zip storage bags. I keep some in my car, a few in my purse, and of course in the bathroom as well.

Toddler Oils

Whenever anybody asks how I manage to keep healthy toddlers, my sanity, and a clean home; I always answer...lots of patience and my Young Living oils.

Having two All-Boy littles, 3 and 1, it gets messy and tiring. Thankfully, I have a few YL oils that have become staples in our daily routine.

Our Daily Toddler Go-Tos

From that first Good Morning Mommy to Good Night kisses, oils are applied, diffused, or being asked for. Some mornings everybody gets a little Peace & Calming because someone is grouchy, but every night consists of Frankincense down the spine and Palo Santo on the bottom of feet. Diffusing on the daily is Purification, if we need a little immune boost Thieves gets alternated in.

KidScents: Mommy Survival in a Bottle

KidScents faves TummyGize, SniffleEase and Owie are my mommy survival secret weapons. Toddler Moms: Don't leave home without them! (Katelyn Terry,  mommy and Tree of Life team member).

KidScents faves TummyGize, SniffleEase and Owie are my mommy survival secret weapons. Toddler Moms: Don't leave home without them! (Katelyn Terry,  mommy and Tree of Life team member).

TummyGize, SniffleEase, and Owie are all that I need for anything that "hurts" and all the things that Mommy can fix. I love KidScents oils for my little guys because, convenience. They are gentle and already diluted, ready to use.

Plus, each KidScents oil contains Caprylic Capric Triglycerides. This skin-loving ingredient, a specific fraction of coconut/palm oil fatty acids, offers noticeable silkiness, exhibits excellent anti-oxidant properties and pampers sensitive skin.

Oils for Mom

I have two boys. 1 and 3. Whenever I tell someone my kids’ ages, they say “You’re busy!” Then I get the smile ... that smile somewhere between “you can do it!” and lots of empathy, especially from mamas who are no longer in the toddler trenches with me.

And they’re right. Having two kids two years apart is no joke. I mean, we laugh a lot. But each day carries it’s own challenges. And that’s why I’m thankful for the help I get from wonderful little Young Living bottles.

So today, as a mom, I’m sharing which oils are on my and my fellow Tree of Life mom bloggers most-used lists. Use it as an inspiration for how to use Essential Oils in your family or as a shopping list for a special mom in your life.

Joy, Rose, DiGize, Thieves, just a few of faves for moms! The best of the best #BecauseYouDeserveIt. Happy Mother's Day!

Mood Support:

Full-time moms, working-moms, work-from-home moms: we all work a lot. And I hope I’m not the only one with a few racing thoughts now and then. (Have your recently cooked while your toddler gets out every pan you own and places them right where you need to stand? Bananas.) Anyway, mood support makes me think of a cheesy, but nonetheless true cliche: If mama ain’t happy, nobody's happy.

  • Joy: I rub a little Joy over anyone’s heart in my family when a grumpy mood hits. That includes me down to my one year old. Want to learn more about Joy? We’ve written about it a lot. I especially love this mom’s perspective from Michelle McKool.
  • Lavender: I love lavender for minor head tension. It’s also a great way to prepare for a sweet night’s sleep. As an oily MVP, it’s also great for DIY beauty creams and dryer balls for fresh laundry.
  • Progessence Plus Serum: Hormone support often goes hand-in-hand with mood support. I love mom and grandma’s Cynthia Lengefeld’s post on how Progessence Plus Serum changed her life.

Home Cleaning:

It’s not glamorous (and hopefully you have plenty of helping hands), but home cleaning is often part of the mom job description. I’ve been working toward a Chemical-Free house cleaning routine, and of course, essential oils and essential oil-infused products have helped a ton on that journey.

  • Purification: Here’s a “Quick: guests are coming, let’s freshen up” tip. Just diffuse Purification. It (duh alert) purifies the air with a refreshing, welcoming scent.

  • Thieves Household Cleaner: Love this stuff! I use it everywhere. The bathroom, kitchen, floors. Plus, it’s a great value. I’ve been using it for nearly two years and I’m still on my first bottle!

  • Lemon: I add lemon and vinegar to my Thieves Cleaner all-purpose recipe for fresh, streak-free clean everywhere! Lemon is also a go-to any stubborn stickiness. As a bonus to teen moms: Lemon helps students concentrate while studying.

Wellness Faves:

As mamas, we also work hard to keep our kids (and husbands) healthy. In my family, this involves a lot of hand washing and a few of these bottles.

  • Thieves: While some mornings get away from me, I try to put a couple drops of Thieves blend on everyone’s feet before they head out the door. This includes me! When I slack, I can tell. It’s truly an essential part of my daily routine.
  • Peace & Calming or Peace & Calming II: My 3 year old loves (and requests) Peace & Calming before bed. A couple drops helps him settle down for a peaceful night’s sleep.
  • Digize: We also write about Digize a lot. It’s great for pregnant mamas and little ones.

Pro Tip: Low on energy? Suzanne Rodolfich gives a great energy boosting suggestion  in her Postpartum Oils post.

Beauty Faves:

And what mama-must have list is complete without a little treat yo’self section? Using Essential Oils for DIY beauty serums is actually a way I have bonded with my own mom over Essential Oils.

  • Ylang Ylang: We both have curly hair and have found adding a drop of Ylang Ylang to wet hair once or twice a week has really nourished our locks and encouraged our curls. Plus, it smells amazing.
  • Rose: This is the treat yourself of all treat yourself oils. A valuable and highly-prized oil, this floral delight can be applied topically for healthy, youthful looking skin.
  • Myrrh: This oil is a great night time moisturizer. I was inspired to add it to my regular routine by Jaynelle, she included it to her top 5 oils!

Happy Mother’s Day from Tree of Life! Which oil would you share with a mom in your life?

Essential Oil DIY Recipe: Love Your Feet Again Foot Powder

Spring is all about fresh flowers, beautiful weather and … wearing sneakers without socks. Just us? Ok. Even if you’re not on the sneakers-without-socks train, warming temperatures mean (among many wonderful things) smellier feet.

But we’ve got one more DIY essential oil-infused recipe for you, and this one will help you love your feet again, no matter the weather. And as with all our DIY recipes, it’s quick, easy and takes just a couple household staples and your favorite oils.

Let’s get started!

Say goodbye to smelly feet with our DIY Foot Powder.

Supplies & Ingredients

Supplies

  • Measuring Spoon
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Small Mason Jar

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Arrowroot powder
  • 3 tablespoons Baking Soda
  • 15 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • 15 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • 10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

OR mix things up and go with 25 drops Purification Essential Oil. The amount of essential oil is a personal preference. Add less or more - it's up to you!

How It’s Done

Just mix up ingredients in your mason jar. #YesReally

Use Today

This part is easy, too. You can either sprinkle the powder in your shoes or rub some on the bottom of your feet before putting on shoes. Experiment with the method, either way, your feet should be lovable again soon! And please, don’t hesitate trying this on your kiddos’ (cute but stinky) feet as well.

Confession time: On a scale from 1-10, how much do you need this powder in your life?

Essential DIY Recipes: Deodorant Powder

We’re back with another essential oil-infused DIY recipe: Deodorant Powder. While ditching commercial hand soaps or toothpastes is often no sweat (hello there, Thieves line), finding a natural deodorant you love can be tough.

We get it. We don’t like to mess with BO or skin sensitivity, either. But we also don’t like to mess with applying harsh chemicals on our bodies, especially so close to lymph nodes and breast tissue. Making your own deodorant helps you ditch no-no ingredients like aluminum and Fragrance and switch to essential oil-powered freshness you can feel great about.

Simple instructions, common supplies, power to personalize...what are you waiting for? This DIY deodorant power is amazing!

Supplies & Ingredients

Supplies

  • Glass Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring Spoons and Cups
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Storage Container (like a salt shaker or baby powder bottle)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch*
  • 10 drops of your favorite Essential Oil

Tree of Life Fresh Favorites: Our team loves adding Purification, Stress Away, Lavender, Cedarwood and Shutran to this natural deodorant recipe. Mix, match and experiment to find your signature scent.

*Pro Tip: We usually prefer arrowroot over cornstarch. Cornstarch can cause skin sensitivity and yeast growth. Test both and find what works for you!

How It’s Done

  1. Combine all ingredients in your glass mixing bowl.
  2. Store in your chosen container.

Use Today

Apply under arms as needed.

Need Extra Protection? You’ve Got it!

If you feel like you need even more BO warding power, you have a few options:

  1. Layer: Apply a few more drops of your favorite scent on top of powder.
  2. Spray:  Or, make a water and purification spray in a glass spray bottle to spray on top. This method is another Tree of Life favorite!

Switch & Ditch: Personal Care Edition

Did anyone already switch to all-natural cleaning products (like this one!) and ditch your chemical-heavy cleaning cohorts? Let us know! A clean sweep never felt or smelled so good.

This week, we are continuing our switch and ditch theme, but now: it’s getting personal. Personal care products, that is.

As far as personal wellness goals go, treating your skin to natural products should be right there on your resolution list along with healthy diet and exercise. And Young Living has plenty of all-natural, essential-oil infused goodies. Ready for some switch and ditch tips? We thought so.

Switch & Ditch: Personal Care Edition

Make your 2017 resolution a reality with a few of our favorites like the ART skincare system, Young Living's super popular face cream, foaming face wash and toner.

Make your 2017 resolution a reality with a few of our favorites like the ART skincare system, Young Living's super popular face cream, foaming face wash and toner.

Oral Care

Let’s start with something you do everyday: brush your teeth. Time to ditch toothpaste with artificial sweeteners and toxic chemicals and switch to natural toothpaste that will freshen your breath and gently wash away staining.

The Thieves lines makes this easy. Try one of three Thieves lines toothpastes along with Thieves Dental Floss and Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash.

Hand Care

Make sure washing or cleaning your hands actually washes and cleanses without artificial fragrances or toxins.

I’m in love with the Thieves Foaming hand soap. It smells wonderful and is a great way to introduce guests to Thieves goodness. For on-the-go cleansing, Thieves Waterless Hand Cleanser is on my must-travel list.

Face Care

Whether you are focusing on cleansing, restoring, moisturizing or refining, Young Living has products and oils to try. Some of my favorite anti-aging oils include:

  • Rose - high-frequency oil great for moisturizing and refining skin
  • Patchouli - favorite oil for daily moisturizing
  • Lavender - skin MVP, a must for cleansing, moisturizing and refining
  • Frankincense - sacred oil that restores and moisturizes skin
  • Myrrh - another must-have for moisturizing

Start slow and experiment. We suggest adding a beauty oil to your order each month. Everyone is different, so everyone will have different favorites. Once you find your favorites, here are a few tips to get the most out of your beauty regime (and save some money).

Make a Homemade Cream

Make your own body and face cream and infuse with your favorite essential oils. That way you get a daily dose of oils, while stretching your supply.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shea butter
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup liquid oil (like almond, grapeseed, jojoba or avocado oil)
  • 5-10 drops of essential oils of choice

Directions:

  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil on stovetop
  2. Let cool completely
  3. Add liquid oil and essential oils for choice
  4. Whip to decadent texture

Homemade Serums

Another way to stretch your beauty oils and save time in your routine: create your own serums. Add your favorite oils and apply after your cream morning and night. To make, you will need to gather a few supplies like 1-oz glass bottles, roller ball fitments and funnels.

Ingredients:

  • 1-oz. favorite carrier oil (again: think liquid food oils like almond, grapeseed or avocado)
  • 1-2 drops each of your favorite anti-aging oils

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a small, amber glass bottle. Yup, it’s that easy!

Hair Care

Tame your locks with natural care products. This one is especially important, considering when you rinse off shampoo it flows down the rest of your body. Young Living has some great daily shampoos (like yummy Lavender Mint) to nourish and cleanse hair.

You can also add oils to your hair care routine. When styling, I add a drop of Ylang Ylang to my hair for a gorgeous floral scent and curl-boosting moisture. Other great hair oils include:

  • Geranium - rehydrates hair, try adding to your conditioner
  • Lavender - nourishes and may thicken hair
  • Rosemary - allows nutrients to penetrate hair and scalp
  • Tea Tree - soothes your scalp

Body Care

Body Wash

Like hair care products, body wash is exposed to large parts of your body. Making your own body wash was never easier with Young Living’s bath and shower gel base. Just add 5-10 drops of your favorite oil. Any of our favorite hair and skin oils would work, or you can try an uplifting blend like Joy.

Deodorants

And finally, we’ll end with another daily personal care product: Deodorant. Young Living offers great aluminum-free options that smell great! (Like this one). You can also experiment using an oil as a deodorant. Purification is a great, cleansing and aromatically fresh option to try!

Switch, Ditch & Save

Ready to ditch commercially produced personal care products? Easy. Switch to buying your natural shampoo, hand soap and floss with Young Living’s autoship program, Essential Rewards. We love it because we get to buy the products we love while earning freebies and points toward even more products we love. We think you will, too!

Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

Switch & Ditch in 2017: Clean House Edition

It’s resolution season, so we’ll take the last two weeks of January to give you tips on a couple of naturally awesome goals. Week 1 Objective: Clean House in your Cleaning Closet.

That’s right. Make 2017 the year you ditch chemical-laden, toxic cleaners and switch to the good stuff. By good stuff we mean cleaners that you don’t have to worry about coming in contact with you or your family’s skin or lungs. And bonus cleaners that do just as good a job (or better!) cleaning every surface of your house.

Read on for practical tips, quick fixes and tried-and-true recipes. Happy Switching and Ditching!

Ditch toxic cleaning products and switch to all-natural, essential oil-powered clean.

Ditch toxic cleaning products and switch to all-natural, essential oil-powered clean.

The All-Important All-Purpose Cleaner

Ditching your old cleaners has another bonus: you can replace all those bottles with just one. Yup. I bought a 14.4 oz. bottle of Thieves Household cleaner 3+ years ago and I am still using it one capful at a time.

I spray this versatile mix on kitchen and bathroom countertops, glass and mirrors. Basically everywhere.*

All-Purpose/Glass Cleaner Recipe

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 capful (approx. 1 tsp) Thieves Household Cleaner
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 3-5 drops your choice oil (I usually use Lemon, but Citrus Fresh or Tea Tree, would be other fresh ideas)

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in your favorite glass spray bottle, spray, wipe away, SMILE.

*When in doubt, try the all-purpose cleaner in a conspicuous spot first. Especially on surfaces like granite or sandstone, where a higher dilution may be in order.

*If you love Thieves Household cleaner, check out the whole line! We’ve included links to some of our favorite products by room to make things (you guessed it) EASY.

Recipe for Clean Tile Floors:

  • ⅛ Cup Thieves Dish Soap
  • ⅛ Cup White Vinegar
  • 1 Gallon Warm Water

Instructions:

Mix and Mop!

Trashcan Tip:

Keep your trash can fresher in two steps!

  1. Put 2-3 drops Citrus Fresh (or preferred Essential Oil, Purification would be a great choice) on a cotton ball.
  2. Place cotton ball in trash can before you insert liner.

Laundry

Thieves Line Quick Fixes: Thieves Laundry Soap

Laundry Soap Tip: Like the household cleaner, this soap is super concentrated. 32-oz. should give you at least 64 loads of clean clothes!

Dryer Sheet Replacement

You know you’re an adult when you get dryer balls for Christmas. But I did this year, and I embraced my adulthood by being totally excited. The wool dryer balls not only help laundry dry faster with less static and wrinkles, they also provide the perfect opportunity to ditch toxic dryer sheets in favor of therapeutic grade essential oils.

I have 4 balls and I add a couple drops of oil to each for a refreshing scent. My favorites are Lavender and Citrus Fresh. Others to try: Stress Away and Joy

Bathrooms

Thieves Line Quick Fixes: Thieves Wipes

Toilet Tips:

I’ve gotten natural toilet cleaning down to 4 steps:

  1. Spray toilet bowl with all-purpose Thieves cleaner (recipe above).
  2. Sprinkle bowl with about ¼ cup baking soda.
  3. Let mixture sit while you wipe down the rest of the toilet with a rag and all-purpose cleaner.
  4. Scrub bowl.

Tub Tips:

Most cleaning sessions, I simply wipe tubs and showers with my all-purpose cleaner, but if deeper cleaning is in order I have a couple of options:

  1. Sprinkle half a lemon with baking soda to tackle stubborn stains.
  2. Create a paste with 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner and 2-3 TB baking soda.
  3. For a refreshing clean, spray tub with vinegar. Adding a few drops of Lavender or Tea Tree oil will help amp up cleaning power and tune out the intense vinegar aroma.

Last Sweep: Miscellaneous Tips

Carpet

Ditch musty carpet smell with this carpet freshener recipe we shared in our Oil of the Week series:

Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients in shaker, mix well and let sit overnight.
  2. Sprinkle over carpets and vacuum.

General Stain Remover

Reach for Lemon for any weird, sticky, stubborn stains. It’s a natural at getting gunk out of your life.

Wood Cleaner

This recipe works wonders on wooden cabinets and furniture:

  • 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner

Oil of the Week: Purification, Always a Conversation Starter

"Your house smells so clean and fresh, what is that?"

"Thanks! It's Young Living Purification oil in my diffuser."

I cannot tell you how many times I've had this conversation. Even my seasoned oil users sometimes don’t believe that it's Purification because it smells so different in the diffuser than in the bottle. Although, it is called PURIFICATION ... so it shouldn't be surprising that it smells so pure and clean.

Diffusing, though, it just one of the many reasons that I LOVE Purification and why it is one of my favorite oils of all times. Let’s start with the basics:

Young Living Purification, a fresh blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Myrtle essential oils.

Young Living Purification, a fresh blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Myrtle essential oils.

Purification Essential Oil Blend helps freshen the air and eliminate odors with its unique combination of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Myrtle essential oils, and naturally-occurring compounds cineol, neral, and geranial (research these compounds, it is very interesting information!).

Let’s break down some of those ingredients.

Citronella

Many of us know about citronella because it is an ingredient in almost every insect repellant on the market, but did you know it has many other useful qualities? For example, citronella can be relaxing, purifying to the skin, while also supporting the respiratory system and normal digestion. Citronella also has a very refreshing and uplifting scent. Great oil, huh?

Lemongrass

Historically, lemongrass has been used for purifying and supporting the digestive system but it can also help maintain healthy circulation and promote the lymphatic system. Lemongrass is also a great oil to massage on with some coconut oil to maintain healthy tissue and ligaments. Lemongrass is considered a “hot”oil; avoid skin irritation by diluting before application.

Lavandin

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is YL’s typical lavender that we all know and love. Lavandin is from our farm in Provence, France and it is actually a cross between our Lavandula augustifolia and spike lavender (Lavendula latifolia). Now, why would YL want to use Lavandin instead of Lavender in Purification oil?

I believe it is because Lavandin is known for its purifying constitutes  it is called Purification after all! In Europe, it's actually very common for veterinary clinics to clean their cages with Lavandin. Lavandin does have similar calming effects like Lavender, and may help support the respiratory system and promote healthy circulation.

Rosemary

Want a little history lesson after our science lesson above? Many of us know Rosemary is an ingredient in our beloved oil blend Thieves (do you know the story of Thieves?) but here is a lesson in ancient history about Rosemary. In ancient Greece (about 1,000 BC), rosemary was burned as an incense. Later cultures believed that it would ward off evil, a practice that would eventually become adopted by those who wanted to protect themselves, like modern day immune support! Rosemary may also support a healthy respiratory system and may help promote mental clarity and concentration.

Tea Tree

Tea Tree is a very popular oil. It has many uses that we have all come to know and love. Tea Tree has a very clean fresh scent and when applied to the skin may help promote healthy looking skin. Tea Tree is known for its purifying properties and may aid the body’s natural response to skin injury and irritations.

Myrtle

Myrtle oil has a mild smell but can punch powerful results! Myrtle is a gentle oil and is typically a “go to” for supporting the respiratory system in children. Myrtle may also help promote healthy skin and could be good to rub on after a hard workout. Myrtle is also referenced several times in Bible, here are a few places you can find it: Nehemiah 8:15, Isaiah 41:19, Isaiah 55:13 – enjoy!

So … do you love Purification yet? I DO! Here are some more product tips you might enjoy.

Product Tips:

  • Add Purification essential oil blend to your washing machine to freshen laundry.
  • Add a couple drops of Purification essential oil blend to shoes to help neutralize odors.
  • Add a few drops to a cotton ball to help eliminate stale air in the office or your child’s room.
  • Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to dispel unpleasant odors and clear the air of impurities (I love adding Orange Oil with it).
  • Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to eliminate odors after the dog returns from playing outdoors in the rain.
  • Apply topically when going outdoors for a pest-free experience.
  • Diffuse to repel bugs, insects and mice.
  • Add a drop or two to your favorite moisturizer morning and evening for healthy looking skin.
  • Apply to skin to aid the body’s natural response to skin irritation or injury.
  • Add a few drops to a glass spray bottle with water for a multipurpose spray solution (I NEVER leave home without this!).

Of course, these are just a few ways to use Purification on a daily basis. No one home should be without it! What are some of your favorite ways to use Purification? Essential Oils and Travel: Preparing Your Own Oily Travel Kit

Over the past several years our family has spent time on mission trips out of the country, primarily in Haiti and most recently Ecuador and Uganda. These trips require quite a bit of planning, and, most importantly, quite a bit of oily preparation!

My older daughter in Ecuador.

My older daughter in Ecuador.

In May, my older daughter spent time in Ecuador while my younger daughter and husband spent time in Africa. On our trips to Haiti we traveled as a family, sharing oils while away. The May trips were different! Each person needed his/her own “oily travel kit.” Since I prepared three of these kits, I thought I would share what my oily travel kit includes.

Travel-Worn Bottles = Healthy Bodies

Beware! These are pictures of actual oil bottles that have traveled out of the country several times. They are NOT pictures of pretty little oil bottles! As much as I LOVE getting pretty, new oil bottles in the mail, I have conceded that ugly oil bottles are a byproduct of healthy bodies.

Keep in mind that these are merely the basic oils our family needs on trips. We also take additional oils used for specific purposes that are part of our daily oily routine such as Progessence Plus Serum, Shutran, Clary Sage, Endoflex, Sacred Frankincense, and others.

Plane Travel & Essential Oils

Carrying On Essential Oils

Although most of our essential oils are in our checked luggage, we make sure we have a few oils with us on the plane. Who knows when the checked luggage will really arrive?!?

Airline travel with oils is relatively simple. Your airline-authorized quart-size liquids bag can accommodate MANY 5mL or 15mL bottles of essential oil. We have never had any airline representative question our inclusion of essential oil in our liquids bag. Our liquids bag always includes peppermint, Thieves, and lavender essential oils as well as a bottle of Thieves spray and a few Thieves lozenges

Top Three Essential Oils for Every Plane Ride

Carry On Essential Oils: Peppermint, Lavender & Thieves.

Carry On Essential Oils: Peppermint, Lavender & Thieves.

1. Peppermint

Inhaling peppermint instantly calms my stomach when air turbulence unexpectedly strikes.

2. Lavender

Lavender can aid in relaxation for those 17-hour international flights!

3. Thieves

Once we have boarded the plane, we immediately reach for Thieves for immune support. Since we travel with flip flops or Crocs for easy security checks, it is important to slather those feet with Thieves and put socks on for the plane ride. Thieves spray comes in handy to spray in our throat or on our hands for extra protection.

My Essential Oil Travel Kit

My travel-worn oily travel kit.

My travel-worn oily travel kit.

Oils in our checked luggage (aka our Oily Travel Kits) include:

  • Valor
  • DiGize
  • R.C. or Raven
  • PanAway
  • Immupower
  • Oregano
  • Purification
  • Frankincense
  • v-6
  • Extra Thieves, lavender, peppermint and lozenges.
  • We always travel with NingXia Red packets and NingXia Nitro, too.

This might seem like a lot, but we want to be prepared for anything! I make sure we have empty capsules to make our own immune-supporting concoctions of oregano, Immupower and frankincense. We all have those days when we are not feeling our best.

Top Travel Tips:

  • R.C. stands for respiratory/congestion which keeps our respiratory systems in tip-top shape.
  • DiGize works well for all things digestion related that can (does) occur when traveling out of the country.

We are THAT Family: Healthy, Happy Travelers

We rely heavily on our oils. So much so, that we are known on every trip as THAT family! Usually as the week begins, we quietly go about using Purification to help repel insects, Thieves for immune support, lavender to promote good sleep, daily NingXia packets and Nitro, peppermint for head discomfort, etc.

My husband and daughter in Uganda.

My husband and daughter in Uganda.

Usually by the end of each trip, almost everyone else has noticed that our family is energetic, rested, and well. Predictably, they begin asking questions. That’s all it takes for me to share oily goodness and share the oil love with the rest of the team members! I have team members from all over the United States whom I met on international trips. It is always a blessing to bless others.

In May, my older daughter was known as the “alchemist” on her trip to Ecuador as she shared oils with her team members, and my younger daughter left most of her oils in Africa to bless the mission families who serve in Uganda.

Time to Start Your Journey!

  • AND your chance to win your very own bottle of R.C.

New Kit, New Look

Sleek new look, same world-leading quality.

Sleek new look, same world-leading quality.

First off, the new packaging is gorgeous! Young Living’s sleek new marketing – think Apple – matches our position as an essential oils world leader. I love the quote on the front of the box: "It's not a slogan—it's our calling."

A Peek Inside

When you open the box, you’ll see 10 oils on top. This part of the box is removable and has a display stand on the back, perfect for when you are sharing with friends, teaching a class or displaying them at a booth.

Underneath the oils, you’ll find:

  • 1 Stress Away (your 11th bonus oil)
  • 2 samples of Ningxia Red
  • 10 oil sample packets

New Kit, New Oils

The starter kit contains 3 new oils:

  • R.C.
  • DiGize
  • Copaiba

These replaced Joy, Citrus Fresh and Tee Tree.

Premium Starter Kit Oils

Here are the 11 oils in the new starter kit.

Stress Away

This blend is a natural solution created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life. Stress Away is the first product to contain the unique stress-relieving combination of lime and vanilla pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Stress Away also includes copaiba and lavender to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Featuring powerful plant constituents, such as the cedrol found in cedarwood and the eugenol that occurs naturally in vanilla, Stress Away can help induce relaxation and reduce occasional nervous tension.

Lavender

Known as the "Swiss Army Knife" of essential oils, Lavender is powerful and versatile. Its refreshing scent brings a sense of peace and harmony.

Peppermint

Peppermint's fresh, energizing aroma is highly regarded for supporting normal digestion, including promoting healthy intestinal function and gastrointestinal system comfort.

Frankincense

This species (Boswellia carterii) includes the naturally occurring constituent boswellic acid, and has a woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma. Diffuse Frankincense during meditation for grounding and purpose. Applying this oil topically may help smooth the appearance of healthy-looking skin, and is excellent to use for massage after activity.

Lemon

Cold pressed from the rinds of fresh, ripe lemons, Lemon has a pleasant and cheerful aroma. It can lift spirits, soothe troubled or oily complexions, and aid in digestive wellness and weight management. It is also great for cleansing and removing sticky residue. Use it to flavor food or your favorite recipe.

Copaiba

Unlike any other essential oil, copaiba is tapped directly from the tree, rather than being distilled. It is a powerful essential oil from South America that has traditionally been used to aid digestion and support the body's natural response to injury or irritation. Copaiba contains the highest amounts of beta caryophyllene (55 percent) of any known essential oil.

Thieves

Thieves essential oil blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals to use while robbing the dead and dying. Young Living’s one-of-a-kind Thieves blend, crafted in the spirit of that legendary combination, can be found in all of our Thieves products. When taken internally, Thieves supports healthy immune function. It also includes Eucalyptus radiata essential oil, which may help maintain a healthy respiratory system.

PanAway

A blend containing wintergreen, helichrysum, clove and peppermint essential oil, PanAway is often used for massage. Rub PanAway essential oil blend on muscles to help alleviate stressed muscles or other physical discomforts.

R.C.

An invigorating blend that includes three varieties of eucalyptus, R.C. is comforting when applied to chest, neck and throat.

Purification

This blend combines citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, and myrtle. Purification gained popularity for its ability to neutralize odors, soothe insect bites, and its crisp, refreshing aroma that helps calm, uplift, and refresh the mind. It is also an excellent choice to soothe skin.

DiGize

Combining powerful essential oils traditionally used for digestive support, this proprietary blend contains ginger, anise, fennel, peppermint, tarragon, lemongrass, patchouli, lemongrass, and juniper essential oils. Use DiGize with every meal, to support a daily wellness regimen.

New Kit, New Flex Oils

In addition to these 11 oils, Young Living has selected 5 "Flex Oils." These oils may be substituted in the event of sourcing constraints or supply considerations. This way the starter kit will always be available for purchase.

Here are the 5 Flex Oils:

Tee Tree

One of the gentlest essential oils available, it possesses powerful properties that are essential for the skin. It helps to moisturize and beautify the appearance of the skin.

AromaEase

AromaEase has a clean, nurturing scent that is calming and relaxing. It utilizes the powerful constituents found in ginger, cardamom, peppermint, fennel, and spearmint essential oils to help soothe occasional stress.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass has a fresh, citrus-herb aroma traditionally used to support normal digestion. It is one of the most versatile essential oils. It can promote proper function of ligaments and tendons as well as proper lymph flow.

Citrus Fresh

Its sweet, fruity combination of orange, tangerine, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and spearmint make Citrus Fresh the perfect uplifting aroma. It supports the immune system and overall health while bringing about a sense of well-being, creativity, and feelings of joy. It is also a great addition to your favorite beverage.

Orange

Orange is high in antioxidants and supports a healthy immune system for overall well-being. Its sunny, sweet, and fruity aroma lifts the spirits while calming the body and mind. It is also a wonderful way to enhance the flavor of many foods and drinks.

Comment about R.C. for your chance to win your very own bottle!

Ed Dailey, RN, a featured speaker at the event, spoke about taking charge of our own health care. "Better health care, arises from better self care." He uses Young Living Essential Oils in integrated hospital care, and joked that he is in the "health" part of the health care field.

He gave all of us a challenge which I would like to pass on to you. He said that we should spend time on each oil and learn all that we can about it. Since we have 3 oils that are new to this kit as well as 3 flex oils that have not previously been featured in the starter kit, let's spend time over the next several months learning all that we can about these oils.

So here's the CHALLENGE: For the next month, learn all you can about R.C. What is in it, what is it used for? LEARN, LEARN LEARN! If you make a comment on the blog about R.C., you will be entered into a drawing to win a free bottle of R.C. Ready, go learn and comment!

Happy (Oily) Mother's Day!

As a little girl, I would dress up and “be” lots of things…a chef, a doctor, a nurse, a teacher, an interior designer. Now, I don’t have to pretend anymore. I became all these things when I chose to be a mom!

I cook for my kids, I tend to their hurts and wounds, and I’m a teacher and a homemaker. In other words, I wear quite a few hats. I love maturing and growing in my motherhood, and I especially cherish each time I enter a season when I learn how to be just a little bit better at one of these roles.

A New Season: Oily Mom

My 5 Oily Kiddos: Brendan, Ashlyn, Kayden, Meagan, & Aspen.

My 5 Oily Kiddos: Brendan, Ashlyn, Kayden, Meagan, & Aspen.

About 4 years ago, I began what I like to call my “oily mom” season. I started learning all about natural remedies and how to tend to my children’s physical needs in a new way. It has been such a blessing to discover how to use essential oils as the first line of health support for my children. I can say that this season has changed each member of our family, especially my kids.

In so many areas of our lives, oils have brought us relief, health, peace, focus, and protection. Even more exciting, it has brought us closer together as a family, especially in the relationships between my kids and me.

The Beginning of our Oily Journey

OilyKid

In the beginning of our oily journey, I knew very little about what I was doing. I just knew I was eager and excited, and I felt confident that Young Living was a company I could use on my children. I also knew that I could always apply the oils to my kids’ feet and that they would benefit from this basic application. So, I began to do nothing more than use a drop or two of oil to support good moods, digestion, better sleep, respiratory system health and more. As I applied the oils to my kids’ feet, I prayed for whatever was bothering them, asking the Lord to use these living oils.

We were never disappointed! Aches eased. Kids slept through the night. Moods softened. I felt like I was able to give my kids something I had never given them before, and I felt the most equipped to be their mom than I had ever felt.

The Real Miracle

OilyKids

As wonderful as this was, the real miracle – the melt-a-mom’s-heart development – came next. My kids began to come to me. They would let me know when they were frustrated, before it got bad, and ask for me to hold them, rub oils on their feet, and pray for them so they would feel better. They saw me as a trusted place to bring their hurts in a way that they had never felt before. All of a sudden, I was spending time every day, hearing the “owies” in my kids’ hearts and bodies, laying hands on them, and bringing them comfort. This opened a whole new door in the intimacy and relationship between each of my kids and me! What mom doesn’t want her kids to bring her their troubles and actually feel equipped to help them?

Now, years down the road, I still get to be the first line of health support for my kids. They ask for my wisdom, and they are learning to develop their own. They no longer just ask for help most of the time, they ask for the specific oil they need because they have learned right alongside their Mom. While the older ones can now apply most oils themselves, they still love to have Mom apply them and spend a few moments letting me take care of them. It’s such a blessing to be an Oily Mom and raise Oily Kids! Here is very brief glimpse of how this gift looks in our home with kids ages 3-15.

Brenden, age 15, “After a long football practice, I like to use Aroma Siez and Pan Away to help keep my muscles from being so sore. It works so great! I also like to use Purification to keep my football bag, cleats, and gear from smelling like football gear. That is not a good smell! My mom helps me put cotton balls in my shoes and bag and uses the oils in my laundry. It really helps.”

Ashlyn

Ashlyn's fresh idea for concentration and quick cleaning fixes? Lemon.

Ashlyn, age 13, “I like lemon oil the best. It helps me concentrate and focus when I study. We diffuse it in our homeschool classroom and it’s especially great when I am taking tests. I also like to put it in my water. It’s really cool too, because lemon helps to take away stains and get sticky things out of the carpet and off counters. It’s a great dry erase board cleaner!  It’s an added bonus that it smells really fresh and clean as well!”

Kayden

Kayden, age 12, “Thieves oil is my favorite oil blend. Whenever I feel bad or start to feel bad, I like to rub Thieves on my feet to help me feel better. I also use it to sanitize my hands so I don’t get anyone else sick. It smells wonderful when we put some in the diffuser to help purify the air.”

Maegan, age 9, “My favorite oil is probably Dream Catcher because it helps me sleep really well and not have bad dreams. I used to get scared at night, but Dream Catcher helps me feel calm and not afraid. I also love Joy oil. I rub it on my chest and feet and back of my neck when I feel anxious and sad, and it really brings me JOY!”

Aspen, age 3, “I like to breathe the oils like this. I like the lavender oil on my feet when I get jammas on and I like it on my itchies when I get a s’quito bite. Oh, and we don’t put oils in our eyes!”

Oily Moms Sound Off: What’s Your Story?

So, in honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, I thought I would share this testimony and some great advice from my kiddos with you. I pray you get the chance to connect with your kids this way. I hope we can learn together as Oily Moms and raise Oily Kids who are well-equipped to use the many resources God has given us!

As you celebrate Mother’s Day, I invite you to share a testimony here of how you use oils as an Oily Mom! If you want to learn more about how to use Young Living oils for your family, we would love to have you as part of the Tree of Life community!
