Beyond the Oils: Premium Starter Kit Goodies

All good things come to an end. But sometimes, even better things come in their place.

We’ve finished our Premium Starter Kit-themed Oil of the Week series. And now, we’d like to introduce you to a brand new page that gives you easy access to each of those posts – and some bonus tips – in one place. It’s your new go-to, on-the-go PSK reference. Bookmark it, share it, study it. It’s for you, enjoy!

We've talked about the oils, but what else comes in your kit? Find out about the samples, tools and other goodies included in the Premium Starter Kit.

We've talked about the oils, but what else comes in your kit? Find out about the samples, tools and other goodies included in the Premium Starter Kit.

While the oils are the spotlight of the kit, this week we’ll cover what else you can look forward to in your PSK: more ways oil, share, learn and dig deeper into what Young Living has to offer.

Ways to Oil

During the series, we made a lot of suggestions for your Essential Oil routine: Applying oils to your feet, directly to stressed muscles, under your tongue and more. The PSK includes two ways to help you use the oils in your day-to-day routine. A rollerball helps you apply an oil just where you need it. And of course, a diffuser is a great way to aromatically enjoy the oils. So for starters, the PSK includes:

  • AromaGlide™ Roller Fitment
  • Diffuser

Ways to Share

If you want to share an oil with friends or family, you’ll find two easy ways to do just that. You can hand them a sample packet or give them a sample oil bottle with a few drops of your favorite oil. Cards with key information will help remind your friend how to use the oil. Start sharing with these easy PSK tools:

  • 10 Sample Packets
  • 10 Love It? Share It! Sample Business Cards
  • 10 Love It? Share It! Sample Oil Bottles

Way to Dig Deeper

Young Living has a lot to offer beyond the kit. Get a small taste of one of their most popular products with two 2-oz. shots of NingXia Red. Formulated with antioxidants and infused with essential oils, this supplement helps support overall wellness.

Ways to Learn More

You’ll find a pouch full of information about your oils, Young Living, and launching your own Essential Oil business in your kit’s front flap. This is a great place to keep any notes you took at an Essential Oils 101 class. Take a peek in your kit to find:

  • Product Guide and Product Price List
  • Essential Oil Magazine
  • Essential Edge
  • Member Resources

Ways to Get in Touch

Have questions about the kit? Or something you want to learn more about? Let us know! We read all comments and emails. So get in touch!

Oil of the Week: Peppermint

Last (but not least), we’ll talk particulars of Peppermint in our final Oil of the Week installment.

Pass the Peppermint!

Peppermint is in the same family as Lavender. As a relative of the Swiss Army knife of Essential Oils, it’s not surprising that Peppermint is also a versatile, everyday oil. Most people have smelled or tasted Peppermint, but this mighty mint can do a lot more than spice up brownies (but really, these brownies are delicious).

Put some pep in your step by adding a drop of Peppermint to a glass of water or tea. We also love Peppermint for digestive support and post-workout massage. Tip: Only put Essential Oils in glass or stainless steel containers.

Put some pep in your step by adding a drop of Peppermint to a glass of water or tea. We also love Peppermint for digestive support and post-workout massage. Tip: Only put Essential Oils in glass or stainless steel containers.

You can reach for Peppermint throughout your day! Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Digestive Support

Just like DiGize or Lemon, Peppermint helps support many facets of healthy intestinal function.

  • Travel: If plane travel gets you down, try inhaling Peppermint to calm down after takeoff.
  • Pregnancy: Oily mamas-to-be, give yourself a treat in those early days by inhaling or diffusing Peppermint.
  • Appetite: Take a bite out of overeating by inhaling Peppermint to satiate cravings before you cave.

All in Your Head

  • Head Support: Refresh head or sinuses by inhaling and/or applying Peppermint directly to your temples and back of neck.

Pro Tip: Peppermint is a hot oil, so test out your tolerance with a carrier oil before you try it neat.

  • Concentration: Try diffusing Peppermint and Lemon when tackling homework or projects that take focus.

De-Stress & Cool Down

  • Post Workout Massage: Treat tired muscles to a soothing Peppermint massage. Just dilute a few drops in your favorite carrier oil and apply as needed.
  • Cool Down: You can also use Peppermint as a way to cool down on a hot summer day. Try it on the back of your neck for a refreshing treat.

DIY Natural Solution

Clear your cobwebs and then mix up this DIY Spray to help keep your home pest free. Combine the following ingredients in an empty 16-oz glass spray bottle.

  • 5-7 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 1 Squirt of eco-friendly dish soap
  • 1 TB of white vinegar (optional)
  • Warm water

Then spray on window frames, doorways and the dark corners where unwanted creatures often hang out. Bonus: This spray is kid and pet friendly and smells great!

Oil of the Week: Lemon

Welcome back to our Oil of the Week series! Last week, we covered PanAway. Next up? Lemon Vitality. Just to recap: each week we’ll be covering an oil or blend from the Young Living Premium Starter Kit. And by covering, we mean offering real, day-to-day tips to help you start using the oils now.

Lemon: Freshly Squeezed Citrus Goodness

You’ve probably had a slice of lemon in your water, and you’ve probably used traditional cleaners with a bright, lemony scent. So you already know some benefits of lemon: it tastes and smells wonderful. But what can Young Living Lemon Vitality do for you? Yup, that’s what we’re here to share.

Citrus Secret: Limonene

Young Living Lemon Vitality supports mood, skin, digestion and more!

Young Living Lemon Vitality supports mood, skin, digestion and more!

75 lemons. That’s what one 15-ml bottle of Lemon Vitality contains. So, it takes just a drop or 2 to reap the benefits of Limonene, a naturally occurring chemical found in citrus rinds. Limonene helps support body functions inside and out, as well as boosting natural house cleaning. Some top benefits include:

  • Healthy, balanced skin
  • Digestive wellness
  • Weight management
  • Mood support
  • Heightened focus
  • Natural flavoring
  • Natural cleaning

Sensitive Skin Watch

Lemon can make your skin more sensitive to UV light and sun. So avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours after application.

4 Ways to Use Lemon Vitality

#1: Diffusion

Try not to smile when you walk into a room with a lemony fresh scent. Lemon is known for its mood-boosting aroma. But beyond that, lemon can help support mental focus. Try diffusing while studying, reading or writing.

Oily Moms-to-Be: Try to diffuse or inhale lemon to beat those morning (noon and night) queezies.

#2: Cleaning

If you ever have the chance to go to a Premium Starter Kit class with some Young Living mentors, you’ll probably hear stories about how lemon saved the day with that weird sticky stuff that nothing else could get out. Lemon is a go-to for chemical-free cleaning. It works AND it smells fresh. When in doubt, reach for lemon.

And lemon can also enhance Thieves household cleaner! Check out our Spring Cleaning post for even more lemon-infused ideas.

#3: Hydration

Drinking more water has a host of benefits, not to mention beautiful skin. Flavor your water with a drop of Lemon Vitality for a crisp and refreshing start to your day.

Note: Only use Young Living essential oils in glass or stainless steel containers.

#4: Flavor

Lemon Vitality was formulated as a dietary supplement. Translation: have fun with flavor! The possibilities are nearly endless. Try lemon in baking, yogurt and marinades. Start with a drop or two, again, Lemon Vitality is highly concentrated!

More Please!

First up, PanAway by Alexis Peters.

The PanAway Power Play

The last 4 years of my life have been a whirlwind. In February 2012, my husband and I were in a head-on car collision on the way to work. One long month in the hospital and 2 major surgeries later, I was on the road to recovery. It was the scariest, hardest, most full of love and support time of my life.

I’m thankful to report that the rest of the whirlwind has been a different journey altogether -- bringing two sweet boys into the world. I’ve come a long way since the wreck and surgeries, but the equation of spinal fusion, two pregnancies and caring for two small children leaves me with lots of aches by the end of each day. Not to mention my postpartum exercise program I’ve added back into my life for the last 3 months or so.

That’s why I’ve really connected with the blend PanAway. It’s designed to:

  • Support stressed muscles
  • Support healthy circulation
  • Help alleviate head tension
  • Prepare the body for a workout

Pick a bullet point, and I’m there at some point of the day. Find out how you can harness the power of PanAway in your own routine. But first, a little background.

What’s in PanAway, Anyway?

Think "Pain Away" when you see PanAway. This mix of Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove & Peppermint helps soothe minor muscle aches and head tension.

Think "Pain Away" when you see PanAway. This mix of Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove & Peppermint helps soothe minor muscle aches and head tension.

PanAway is an essential oil blend. So it’s a mix of several therapeutic-grade essential oils:

  • Wintergreen
  • Helichrysum
  • Clove
  • Peppermint

These oils work together to soothe minor aches and penetrate skin for optimal benefit.

Sensitive Skin Watch

PanAway can possibly cause skin sensitivity. Test PanAway on a small skin patch before massaging further. Dilute with your favorite massage oil or carrier oil (I’ve tried Jojoba with great success) to help lessen your chances of irritation and to stretch the blend if you want to massage a larger part of your body (e.g. your back).

Going Deeper: Perfect Pairings

Add more Helichrysum for a deep tissue massage. For additional bone support, more Wintergreen may be applied.

4 Ways to Use PanAway

#1: Muscle Out Minor Muscle Aches:

Option 1: Massage.

Step 1: Dilute 1-2 drops PanAway with your favorite carrier oil (coconut or olive oil are 2 other options).

Step 2: Massage directly on your stressed, tired muscles after a workout or a day chasing babies.

Option 2: Warm Compress:

For prolonged soothing, try a warm compress. Perfect end to a long day!

Step 1: Apply 1-3 drops of PanAway plus carrier oil on location or along spine.

Step 2: Cover with a hot, damp towel.

Step 3: Layer on a dry towel, leave for 10 minutes to half an hour.

#2: Circulation Support

Step 1: Dilute 1-2 drops PanAway with your favorite carrier oil.

Step 2: Massage on location in the direction of your heart (e.g. for legs, start at your ankle and work your way up).

#3: Head Tension

Work toward calm with these tips.

Option 1: Aromatically

Diffuse PanAway or apply 1 drop to hands, rub them together and inhale.

Option 2: On Location

Rub 1-2 drops diluted PanAway on temples and back of neck.

#4: Work Out Your Workout

Apply to the neck before your workout for invigorating respiratory and muscular support.

More, Please!

And there you have it. The first installment of our Oil of the Week series. We love sharing and learning about the oils, so we’d love to hear from you! Do you have any tips or questions about PanAway? Leave them in the comments.

Essential Oils History 101

From Queen Cleopatra’s personal spa to our nightly routines, essential oils have been...well...essential in people’s lives for thousands of years. So today, we decided to take a look back. Way back, to the beginning of essential oils’ rich history.

We love how the oils we use on a daily basis have been used by people from nearly every major ancient culture. They must have been on to something, huh? Consider this your Essential Oils History 101 crash course. Buckle up, we have human history to cover.

Oil Like an Egyptian

Queen Cleopatra used plant-based oils and pastes in her famous beauty spa.

Queen Cleopatra used plant-based oils and pastes in her famous beauty spa.

Recorded essential oil history starts with the Egyptians. As a world power for almost 30 centuries, their love of oils was diffused around the world to cultures like the Jews, Greeks and Romans. Want to oil like an Egyptian? Here are a few ways they used oils and plant-based products in their culture.

  • Beauty: Famous for her radiant skin, Queen Cleopatra opened the world’s first spa. She extensively used...you guessed it...essential oils.
  • Burial: The items that Egyptians chose to bury with their Pharaohs gives us insight into what they treasured. It’s no surprise that King Tut was buried with 350 liters of essential oils!
  • Worship: The oils were considered sacred and at height of Egyptian power only priests were allowed to use them. In fact, each deity had a dedicated oil.
  • Power: Pharaohs also had blends developed for every aspect of their rule, from love and war to mediation.

The Wild East

"The Yellow Emperor's Book of Internal Medicine" is still used by eastern medicine practitioners today!

"The Yellow Emperor's Book of Internal Medicine" is still used by eastern medicine practitioners today!

Essential oils were also valued in eastern cultures like China, India and Persia.

  • China: Essential oils were first recorded in the east between 2697-2597 BC, during the legendary Yellow Emperor’s reign. His book “The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine” covers essential oil use and is still a classic resource of modern eastern medicine practitioners.
  • India: Ayurvedic medicine has a 3000 year history with essential oils for health and spiritual purposes. The literature contains over 700 substances including some of our favorites: Cinnamon, Ginger, Myrrh and Sandalwood.
  • Persia: A prolific researcher on plants and their effect on humans, Avicenne was the first person to record his distillation methods in 980 BC. They are still in use today!

Fit for a King

Dark Times

What does Thieves Essential Oil Blend have to do with the Black Plague? Check out one of our top posts to find out!

The Dark Ages were a dark time for humanity and essential oils. Holistic healing and baths (yes, really) were prohibited by the church. However some essential oil tradition continued as people leaned on aromatic blends to counterbalance the church’s anti-bathing stance. As a bonus, this practice actually supported the user's immune system.

The Dark Ages and Bubonic Plague also brought us Thieves blend! Read how the Black Plague set the stage for one of our most beloved oil blends.

French Connection

The French, including chemist Rene Gattefosse, developed many of our modern Essential Oil techniques.

The French, including chemist Rene Gattefosse, developed many of our modern Essential Oil techniques.

Modern Essential Oils study started in France. French chemist Rene Gattefosse coined the term “aromatherapy” in 1937 after observing lavender’s skin-boosting results. Other essential oil experts followed: Dr. Jean Valet who used Essential Oils to help injured WWII soldiers and Marguerite Maury who pioneered The Raindrop massage technique. Thanks to Robert Tisserand, much of France’s aromatherapy knowledge has been translated to English for us to learn from today.

A New Beginning: 3 Tips for Getting Started with Essential Oils

I’ve been curious about a natural approach to wellness for awhile. From yearning for a chemical-free home to eating cleaner, I realized that using products that are straight from the earth have to be better than harsher, man-made alternatives.

And now more than ever, with a nearly two-year-old son (and a another sweet boy on the way), I decided it was time to start the shift in earnest. Enter: Young Living. Aptly enough, the process started organically. One of my fellow work-from-home moms in my playgroup happened to be Jaynelle Leek-Binns.

She knew I was a freelance digital copywriter and editor and asked me to help her start sharing the power of Essential Oils online. Thus TreeofLifeYL.com was born. As the editor for all of the Tree of Life posts, I got to read (and reread) the stories and tips from people in her organization who loved and used the oils themselves and for their families.

Let’s just say, the blog works! I was quickly convinced that Young Living’s Essential Oils and products were exactly what I needed to help guide my growing family to greater, natural wellness. Soon enough, I had my very own Premium Starter Kit.

But how do you really get started with the Premium Starter Kit? Here are a few tips I’ve learned from the very beginning of my oily journey.

1. Go to a Class

Tree of Life leaders have classes going on all the time! Check out our upcoming schedule for an interesting one near you.

Tree of Life leaders have classes going on all the time! Check out our upcoming schedule for an interesting one near you.

Yes, I am helping Tree of Life educate people on the internet, but going to a real, live class helped me connect with my oils on a deeper level. I was able to smell each one, take notes and ask questions.

I also got to meet a few other people who were further on their journey to wellness than me. Check out our class schedule to see if there is one near you! I highly recommend the experience.

2. Get to Know Your Fellow Tree of Life Members

Tree of Life is all about community. So, when I text Jaynelle or another member with a question about an oil (which one would be good for healthy circulation? glowing skin? fill in the blank?), I know I’m not bugging her. I know that she’s eager to help me learn more about using the oils in my day-to-day life.

You can also connect with the group on our Facebook page, for the feeling of family without having to leave your house.

3. Find Reliable Sources

New to Young Living Essential Oils? Time to bookmark some trusted sources for those "What oil do I need now?" moments.

Texting is great, but not a 24/7 option. So self-educating is important, too. Here are a few sources that I’ve already found to help with those “which oil helps with immune support?” type of dilemmas. (That’s an easy one, of course...Thieves!).
