Essential Oils History 101

From Queen Cleopatra’s personal spa to our nightly routines, essential oils have been...well...essential in people’s lives for thousands of years. So today, we decided to take a look back. Way back, to the beginning of essential oils’ rich history.

We love how the oils we use on a daily basis have been used by people from nearly every major ancient culture. They must have been on to something, huh? Consider this your Essential Oils History 101 crash course. Buckle up, we have human history to cover.  

Oil Like an Egyptian

Queen Cleopatra used plant-based oils and pastes in her famous beauty spa. 

Recorded essential oil history starts with the Egyptians. As a world power for almost 30 centuries, their love of oils was diffused around the world to cultures like the Jews, Greeks and Romans. Want to oil like an Egyptian? Here are a few ways they used oils and plant-based products in their culture.

• Beauty: Famous for her radiant skin, Queen Cleopatra opened the world’s first spa. She extensively used...you guessed it...essential oils.
• Burial: The items that Egyptians chose to bury with their Pharaohs gives us insight into what they treasured. It’s no surprise that King Tut was buried with 350 liters of essential oils!
• Worship: The oils were considered sacred and at height of Egyptian power only priests were allowed to use them. In fact, each deity had a dedicated oil.
• Power: Pharaohs also had blends developed for every aspect of their rule, from love and war to mediation.  

The Wild East

"The Yellow Emperor's Book of Internal Medicine" is still used by eastern medicine practitioners today! 

Essential oils were also valued in eastern cultures like China, India and Persia.

• China: Essential oils were first recorded in the east between 2697-2597 BC, during the legendary Yellow Emperor’s reign. His book “The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine” covers essential oil use and is still a classic resource of modern eastern medicine practitioners.
• India: Ayurvedic medicine has a 3000 year history with essential oils for health and spiritual purposes. The literature contains over 700 substances including some of our favorites: Cinnamon, Ginger, Myrrh and Sandalwood.
• Persia: A prolific researcher on plants and their effect on humans, Avicenne was the first person to record his distillation methods in 980 BC. They are still in use today!

Dark Times

What does Thieves Essential Oil Blend have to do with the Black Plague? Check out one of our top posts to find out! 

The Dark Ages were a dark time for humanity and essential oils. Holistic healing and baths (yes, really) were prohibited by the church. However some essential oil tradition continued as people leaned on aromatic blends to counterbalance the church’s anti-bathing stance. As a bonus, this practice actually supported the user's immune system.

The Dark Ages and Bubonic Plague also brought us Thieves blend! Read how the Black Plague set the stage for one of our most beloved oil blends.

French Connection

The French, including chemist Rene Gattefosse, developed many of our modern Essential Oil techniques. 

Modern Essential Oils study started in France. French chemist Rene Gattefosse coined the term “aromatherapy” in 1937 after observing lavender’s skin-boosting results. Other essential oil experts followed: Dr. Jean Valet who used Essential Oils to help injured WWII soldiers and Marguerite Maury who pioneered The Raindrop massage technique. Thanks to Robert Tisserand, much of France’s aromatherapy knowledge has been translated to English for us to learn from today.

Glass Cleaner

• 1 capful Thieves Cleaner
• 1 tsp white vinegar
• 5 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
• 3 Cup water

Just spray, wipe away and smile at your gleaming, streak-free reflection -- you've just eliminated more chemicals from your home! 

Pro Tip: You can use lemon to remove stubborn goo. Just apply 1-2 drops to grease, glue or even crayon and scrub.

Orange Wool Dryer Balls

Essential Oils: Gifts Fit for a King

Matthew 2:11 “As they [the wise men] came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” 

They opened their treasure boxes. As I contemplate that phrase, I am reminded that essential oils are treasures. Honestly, I don’t always treat them as such. I keep oils in my kitchen, in my bathroom, in my purse – everywhere I am! I treat them almost casually because they are as much a part of my life as breathing! Scripture has a “funny” way of reminding me, of bringing me back to what is important.  

Essential Oils: Gifts Fit for a King

The wise men traveled for months to find a “king” they had read about. When they found him, with the help of the Lord and a star, they bowed down and worshiped him.  Then, they opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts!

They offered the Treasure of Heaven gifts from their treasure boxes. Gifts they had prepared in advance. Gifts they had carried for miles. Precious gifts. Gifts fit for a king: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Essential oils for a child? Yes. Essential oils for a poor family in a foreign country? Yes. Essential oils for a king? Yes.  

Why Frankincense & Myrrh?

Why? Did Mary and Joseph know they were treasures? Why were they treasures?   What was their purpose? Did they know what to do with them?

Plants and oils were part of everyday life in Bible times, much like they are in mine today! So, what made these two oils, frankincense and myrrh, more precious than others? Thanks to history and science, we have learned much about these two plants and essential oils. Let’s take a look at them!

Frankincense: The Right Frequency  

Frankincense has one of the highest frequencies in the essential oil world. Your body has frequencies as well. When the frequencies of your body come in contact with the frequencies of frankincense oil wonderful things happen!

Historically, frankincense was used for:

• anointing
• aromatherapy
• spiritual enhancement
• healing and wellness

I admit, I do not do much anointing on a daily basis, but I do use my oils for the other purposes listed.

Much research has been done in my home on the use of frankincense and promoting skin care. I do not have to go further than my bathroom mirror to see the amazing skin benefits of frankincense.  

I have also personally found that adding frankincense to other oils I use truly “kicks it up a notch.” Perhaps the high frequency gives my body what it is needs to keep doing what it is designed to do!  

Whatever the scientific reason, I know our home will never be without our frankincense!  We use it for spiritual health, emotional health, and physical health.

I have used it to support my:

• sleep

Frankincense is a day-to-day treasure for issues that arise in our home!

Myrrh: A Multitasking Treasure

Let’s move on to the treasure of myrrh oil. Yes, I love my frankincense, but myrrh is a treasure in our home, too. Although myrrh’s frequency is not as high as frankincense, it was one of the most desired oils in Bible times.

Historically, it was used to prevent infection, to aid in healing of the skin, and, of course, to promote spiritual awareness. Perhaps the skin on Mary’s belly was not as smooth as it had been. Perhaps as her baby grew, he might fall and scrape his knee.  Perhaps this young family would use their myrrh in worship.

Since Mary had just given birth, she would certainly find many uses for her newly acquired treasure of myrrh, both for herself and her family. It is an oil that can promote:

• dental health
• skin health
• respiratory health
• immune system

Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) Health: Cornerstone to Your Overall Health

If your digestive system is in order, it should be filled with healthy bacteria (flora) and enzymes that break down your food while supporting your immune system, nervous system and all of your hormonal functions. Translation: You’ll feel great!

What damages the gut flora lining?

The 4 R’s of GIT Health

Support your GIT health by remembering the 4 R’s.

1. REMOVE

God created our bodies and our foods... let's just try to stick to His foods – His plan. Start your journey to GIT health by removing stressors and these unhealthy food choices from your life:

• fake foods that are loaded in toxins (aka “processed foods”)
• strong & excessive caffeine
• sugars
• sugar substitutes
• diet colas & regular colas
• preservatives
• alcohol
• gluten & dairy (test these one at a time to see if your body responds because not everyone is sensitive to them)

Rule of thumb: If there are words on the ingredients list you can’t pronounce, then don’t buy it. And if the ingredients probably won’t be found in your own kitchen ingredients pantry, then don’t buy it.

2. REPAIR

I take  Oregano Oil, Copaiba, and Thieves to promote organ health. Organic coconut oil is great for its probiotic power. 

Time to take action! Here are 4 steps to help repair your GIT health.

Step 1: As part of an unprocessed diet, be sure to include omega-3s like OmegaGize and vitamins such as zinc, antioxidants (vitamins A, C, & E), L-glutamin, quercitin, aloe vera, and turmeric. Baby, It's Cold Outside: Get Your Slique (Tea) On

I was out of town for a couple of weeks and when I returned my box was here. You know the one. The one that, even if I already have every single item in it, is always my favorite box. But this box was different. This box did have something new. It had my Slique Tea.

"I don't know what took me so long..."

I don't know why I waited so long to try this cozy cup of deliciousness! 

I don’t know what took me so long to order it, I thought about it a dozen times. It just kept getting pushed off for something ‘better.’ Well, I am here to tell you, no more. Thanksgiving How-To: Incorporating Essential Oils into your Holiday

Feeling a little overwhelmed about getting through these next few days? There's the house to clean, food to cook (including a giant turkey!), and family to see. Spice Up Some Treats

Spice up your favorite dishes the Young Living way! I love cooking with Cinnamon Bark, Lemon & Nutmeg essential oils. 

Essential oils make a great addition to many recipes. I've added Oregano to spaghetti sauce, Lemon to ice cream and Rosemary to chicken. For this holiday my recommendation would be to substitute your typical Thanksgiving spices such as Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg with your essential oils instead. Just remember essential oils are pretty potent so just try a drop or maybe 2 to start with.

Favorite Side Dish: Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:

2-4 Sweet Potatoes

Olive Oil (to toss)

1 drop each of Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg and Ginger

Pinch of salt and brown sugar (optional)

Instructions:

1. Set oven to 350.

2. Peel sweet potatoes and chop into cubes.

3. Toss in olive oil and essential oils.

4. Spread out on a cookie sheet.

5. Bake for about 45 minutes.  

So delicious! I could eat the whole pan! Really...I think I did one time. But they're so good for you, it's ok! The sweet potatoes provide nutritional value and Vitamin A, and the essential oils contribute immune support from the Cinnamon Bark, digestive support from the Ginger and a boost of energy from the Nutmeg!

Favorite Festive Drink: Cider

Another great treat that’s even better when infused with essential oils is a good cup of Cider! Young Living shared a great recipe around Halloween for Witch's Brew, but it would be even better for this holiday. It's infused with Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Clove and Nutmeg. It has the same benefits as the Sweet Potato recipe (due to the similar oils used) except you have the added benefits of Lemon Essential Oil to help give you a more positive outlook and ability to focus on what else you need to do before the guests arrive!

Rapid Recovery

Spend time with your family...not the bathroom with the help of DiGize and Peppermint essential oils. 

After you have consumed all your Turkey, Gravy, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Salad and any other annual side dishes, you may need a little help to get through the rest of your evening and decrease your trips to the bathroom. Over the past year, For Our Healing has grown. We’ve added new members, cheered on new leaders and created a one-stop site for news, posts, class schedules, tips and more. Whew, 2015 has been busy!

To celebrate, we decided to cultivate our creativity with a new logo (designed by the talented John Cater) and a new name (...drumroll…) Tree of Life. What’s in a name? We think a lot. Here’s why we’re making the shift.

Biblical Roots: Our Core Verse

Branching out with our new look! We think our new logo perfectly expresses the Tree of Life concept with a tree silhouetted in an oil droplet. 

“On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

There’s actually nothing changing about our group’s roots. We believe that God created plants, seeds, leaves, trees and fruit to help us achieve greater day-to-day wellness. So our new name comes straight from a verse that has inspired us from the very beginning, Revelation 22:2.

A New Beginning: 3 Tips for Getting Started with Essential Oils

I’ve been curious about a natural approach to wellness for awhile. From yearning for a chemical-free home to eating cleaner, I realized that using products that are straight from the earth have to be better than harsher, man-made alternatives.

And now more than ever, with a nearly two-year-old son (and a another sweet boy on the way), I decided it was time to start the shift in earnest. Enter: Young Living. Aptly enough, the process started organically. One of my fellow work-from-home moms in my playgroup happened to be Jaynelle Leek-Binns.

She knew I was a freelance digital copywriter and editor and asked me to help her start sharing the power of Essential Oils online. Thus TreeofLifeYL.com was born. As the editor for all of the Tree of Life posts, I got to read (and reread) the stories and tips from people in her organization who loved and used the oils themselves and for their families.

Let’s just say, the blog works! I was quickly convinced that Young Living’s Essential Oils and products were exactly what I needed to help guide my growing family to greater, natural wellness. Soon enough, I had my very own Premium Starter Kit.

But how do you really get started with the Premium Starter Kit? Here are a few tips I’ve learned from the very beginning of my oily journey.

1. Go to a Class

Tree of Life leaders have classes going on all the time! Check out our upcoming schedule for an interesting one near you. 

Yes, I am helping Tree of Life educate people on the internet, but going to a real, live class helped me connect with my oils on a deeper level. I was able to smell each one, take notes and ask questions.

I also got to meet a few other people who were further on their journey to wellness than me. Check out our class schedule to see if there is one near you! I highly recommend the experience.

2. Get to Know Your Fellow Tree of Life Members

Tree of Life is all about community. So, when I text Jaynelle or another member with a question about an oil (which one would be good for healthy circulation? glowing skin? fill in the blank?), I know I’m not bugging her. I know that she’s eager to help me learn more about using the oils in my day-to-day life.

3. Find Reliable Sources

New to Young Living Essential Oils? Time to bookmark some trusted sources for those "What oil do I need now?" moments.

Tree of Life Speaks Up: 8 Highlights from the 2015 Young Living Convention

This year’s Young Living Convention theme was “Light the Fire.” We couldn't have chosen a better name! The speakers, meals together and oily classed ignited the Tree of Life team’s passion for wellness, purpose and abundance! Highlight #1: Heartfelt Sincerity & Passion from our Founders and Team

All the oily talk was interesting, and it was good to hear how differently everyone uses the oils.

I enjoyed each of the inspiring speakers, but mostly I enjoyed hearing from Gary and Mary Young. Each time they spoke they did so with heartfelt sincerity. It seems apparent that their desire is to maintain the high standards that have already been set and truly want the best for Young Living and its members.

Highlight #2: Inspirational Humility from Gary Young

"My life would not be as blessed as it is now, without Young Living!" -- Joyce Swanson with our Diamond, Janie Leek. 

Kyle Maynard and Jon Acuff were amazingly inspirational and recharging for me, as well as many other presenters. But the main thing that keeps blessing me is the talk Gary Young did on the last day. I have heard him speak numerous times over the past 4 years. He has always been humble, grateful and passionate about his work. But this year, he went WAY beyond!

His humbleness really just burst forth…which I am sure sounds like an oxymoron….but seriously, he exuded the gratitude he has for his Father God. He was passionate about his desire to be found worthy of all the things God keeps showing him that His People need, and, amazingly, God has protected Gary SO many times as he has pursued his Young Living vision.

I am so honored to be a part of a company, and wider family at Young Living that has such respect for mankind, vision for the future, generosity for those in need, and a line of products that enables all that to happen! My life would not be as blessed as it is now, without Young Living!

Highlight #3: Time with Awesome Team Members

What an amazing two sessions that I was blessed to attend this past week at the Gaylord Texan! This was my 12th workshop to attend and I must say that it was the BEST ever! They just keep getting better each year. I believe that the two highlights for me was having either lunch or dinner with each of my AWESOME team members and getting to know them better and hearing Kyle Maynard speak. What a remarkably inspiring talk he gave at both sessions!

Highlight #4: The Story of Black Spruce Oil

"The convention is like being with 10,000 of your friends!" -- Dena Jones with many of the Tree of Life team. 

I was truly inspired by the speakers, but I got goosebumps when Gary, introduced as The Modern Day Father of Distillation (love that), shared the struggles and obstacles that had to be overcome in building a new farm and distillery so we could have Black Spruce. Located in Ft. Nelson, BC, the new farm has a special ingredient: the electrical charge from the Northern Lights. It comes down to touch the trees. Yes. Really.

I also loved getting to meet, hang out and learn from my upline.

Highlight #5: Learning How to Make Small Changes with BIG Impact

I had many things I loved at the convention. I think the biggest thing I took away was about how to spend regular, even if small, amounts of time to connect with people. I also loved the YL fit exercise and nutrition class. I learned how to make small changes to control appetite, as well as not making excuses when it comes to making exercise a daily habit.

As a first-year attendee to the Young Living Convention I was both very impressed and a bit overwhelmed! I loved the classes and the speakers who seemed very knowledgeable about various topics. I loved learning about the oils of course, but even more so I loved seeing our founder, Gary and CEO Mary interacting with both their family and others. It was inspirational to hear that it is not always about curing diseases or treating ailments, but to live a life of wellness accompanied by the oils to achieve wellness, purpose and abundance!
